Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! Never in the history of Nappie parties have I seen such a turnout like we had at this year’s awards ceremony, which were held at the exquisite Saenger Theatre Wednesday, July 18. The night started out with cocktails and delicious hors d’oeuvres provided by the Royal Scam (LOVED THOSE TUNA MARTINIS!).

Social scenesters Ann Bedsole, Carol Hunter, Carlos Parkman and councilmen John Williams and William Carroll (who picked up the Nappie for Hardest Working Councilman) were among the minglers. Media folks included “Sexiest” Nappie winners Scott Walker and Anissa Centers. Ms. Centers turned quite a few heads in her hot little minidress and certainly showed the audience why Lagniappe readers chose her as the Sexiest Newslady and Best Anchor. WKRG’s Randy Patrick “modeled” his golden sports cup – the fourth in his trophy case for “Best Sports Coverage.”

And though we have picked on him mercilessly for the e-mail terrorism at WPMI, the Healthy Choice-lovin’ Greg Petersen came with Jim Loznicka in tow.

Dan Brennan, who picked up the Nappie for DJ whose voice leads you to believe you would like to see him naked, thanked the crowd but said he had a lot of ‘splainin’ to do to his wife. His co-host, who picked up the female version of the award, said she owed her win to the Mobile Fire Department. Well she did look smokin’ hot!

WZEW’s Sean Sullivan also picked up his fourth award for Best DJ/Morning Show and said it was an honor to stand on the same stage Clifford the Big Red Dog had stood on.

Bar proprietors and restaurateurs Dave Rasp (Heroes/Royal Scam), David Cooper, Jr. and Louis DeValle, (Felix’s) John Thompson (Callaghans), the Walker Brothers (Liquid/Bike Shop) and Wendell Quimby (The Garage), along with their crews, were in attendance to pick up their lovely/tacky, golden spray-painted awards. Mike from Double Olive demonstrated his excellent cleaning skills with the “Golden Toilet brush” as he picked up the Nappie for Best Bar Bathroom.

Best New Local Band finalist Roman Street played in the lobby and were awesome. And Best New Local Band winner El Cantador did the lovely Saenger stage justice and then some for a post-awards-show performance.

And one of the biggest highlights of the evening was the short film by local filmmakers/writers/actors Carson Kennedy, Nick Shantazio, Jordan Bramblett, Marcus Rosentrater and Mason Merrill. They did an amazing job, and we’re hoping for a repeat performance next year. We should have it online soon, so make sure to sign up for our e-mail list at www.lagniappemobile.com, and we’ll let you know when it’s up.

The After-party

After the awards, everyone moved down to the official after-party at The Royal Scam, where misbehavin’ ran rampant. We’d just like to go ahead and put out a blanket apology for the Lagniappe crew- several of whom were swept out with the empty beer bottles.

The shots were bad (in idea- not taste) but the party was good, with music provided by Eric Erdman and Dale Drinkard of Ugli Stick fame. And local WKRG newsies Jene Young and Steve Alexander made a late night appearance, as did some of our favorite Press-Register folks, who shall remain nameless so they won’t be interrogated.

All and all, we think it was the Best Nappies ever, and we can’t wait until next year. Thanks for five years, guys!

Move over Port City, We’re The Virile City

City attorney Larry Wettermark said he recently had a case against the city thrown out by a woman/former city employee who said the city got her pregnant out of wedlock. Apparently, she hadn’t been pregnant for years and the stress of dealing with her employer made her “make poor contraceptive decisions.” Apparently a good bit of the stress was caused by an uneven keyboard, which she claimed the city refused to fix.

Too much to drink, uneven keyboards, it happens.

Leann Watters party

WZEW DJ LeeAnn Waterrs celebrated her 40th birthday at the swank digs of Huka Productions on Dauphin Street July 21. Nappie-award winning Best Local Band Peek played an energetic set out on the courtyard, with the help of LeeAnn’s hubby/92 Blues host Tim Camp on keyboard. Tim also prepared a very special surprise for his birthday girl by playing a recording of LeeAnn’s favorites Zew artists wishing her a happy birthday, including Michelle Shocked, del sol and the Low Millions, among others.

Happy belated birthday from the Lagniappe crew, LeeAnn!

Cary Party

Speaking of “0” birthdays, the Fruit Loop spies report Gabriel’s longtime, beloved bartender Cary Scott celebrated his 50th July 21 in the Gabby’s courtyard, surrounded by friends, family and regulars.

Later in the night at B-Bob’s, he was recognized by the DJ during the drag shows. Happy 50th Cary!

Noone-atics invade Saenger

On Saturday July 21, Peter Noone and Herman’s Hermits played to an enthusiastic crowd at The Saenger Theatre. Apparently they are so enthusiastic they are called “Noone-atics.”

After the show the Hermits guitarist made an appearance at Martinis, where he jumped on the guitar and accepted requests. He stumbled through a few Van Morrison songs and then apologized saying he didn’t really know much Van. But then he played a fairly impressive version of Elton John’s “Levon.”

Then the buzz was kind of killed when some kid who had absolutely no idea who he was requested some Rage Against The Machine. Actually, a lounge style version of “Killing in the Name of” may be pretty cool, but not for the Noone-atics.

Last minute nastiness

OK, so right before deadline someone sent me a text that said that everyone in the Garage took their shirts off Thursday, July 26. I’m told this defrocking was lead by their head cheese, owner Wendell Quimby. Though Quimby was not available to confirm or deny this, the spy did send a picture and I’ll have to say, some of you – yeah you – really shouldn’t take your shirts off. Yeah.

Well kids, that’s all I got for now. August is usually a slow gossip month, so please do something scandalous for the Boozester’s sake. And remember whether rain or shine, dramatic or scandalous or just some plain ol’ Noone-atic lovin’, I will be there. Ciao.
