Where: Lower Dauphin Street in downtown
When: Friday, Sept. 14, 7 p. m.
Labor Day signals rejoice in these parts. No, not because it means hurricane season has reached its zenith or because it signals the end of summer is only eight weeks away.
The cause for jubilation is that the annual Greater Mobile Area Arts Awards ceremony is at hand. The fourth rendition takes place Sept. 14 in Cathedral Square during the monthly LoDa Artwalk.
Last year’s event drew record crowds and this version looks to repeat that provided the rain and heat stay at bay.
The 2007 recipients are:
Artist- Lil Greenwood
Business- Alabama Power
Educator- Former University of Mobile Arts and Sciences Dean Charles Madison “Mack” Clark
Organization- Joe Jefferson Players
Volunteer- Baldwin and Mobile Pops founder Joe Riemer
An evening with Lil Greenwood & The E. B. Coleman Orchestra
Where: Saenger Theatre (6 S. Joachim St.)
When: Saturday, Sept. 1, 7 p. m.
For those who want a sneak peek at the talent that garnered Lil Greenwood a 2007 MAC award, this showcase is a perfect chance. The former singer for Duke Ellington will once again front a big band onstage and let her chops do the convincing.
Greenwood’s backing ensemble, founded by legendary educator and jazz pioneer E. B. Coleman, contains several musicians who have been members for over two decades.
Also on the bill are new local sensations Roman Street and the Africatown Poets.
Rumor abounds that local chanteuse Karmilla Ali will appear.
Word also has it area media and jazz personnel will be honored in a ceremony so if you want to see Lawrence Specker blush, make sure to show.
Proceeds benefit RGH, Inc., who provide housing for those with special needs.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
