A Bruce Larsen Christmas

Where: Mobile Museum of Art (4850 Museum Dr. in Langan Park)

When: Fri., Nov. 30 – Sun., Jan. 6

Area artist Bruce Larsen has become renown for his extraordinary vision that turns seemingly mundane found objects into singular works of art. In fact, the enormous kinetic sculpture at the museum’s entrance is a product of his fertile mind and diligence.

Larsen claims this show will “return to Christmas the homespun ‘look what I made you’ ideal.” The museum lists a satire of Wal-Mart among the works in the show that will encompass both sound and video installations.

Museum hours are Mon – Sat, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sun, 1 – 5 p.m.

Entrance is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and military, $6 for students and group rates are available.

Where: Gulf City Lodge (601 State Street-adjacent to Dunbar Performing Arts School)

When: Mon., Nov. 26, 6:30 p.m.

Jackson, Mississippi native Wilson has carved her own path through American music over the last two decades and earned a reputation as unique as her multi-influenced songs.

The singer and musician draws from pop, blues, jazz, world music and country in a mesmerizing blend and it’s easy to see why acclaimed Pensacola vocalist/pianist Cynthia Neves lists her as a seminal influence.

This event closes the fifth year of the educational/entertainment series for MOJO.

Entrance is $7 for MOJO members, $10 for non-members and includes a jambalaya dinner.

The Swell and The Sway by Sheesh

Where: Mobile Arts Council (318 Dauphin St.)

When: Mon., Dec. 3 – Fri., Dec. 28

Departing from his day gig as a Mardi Gras float-builder, local artist Sheesh has taken his unique work on to success beyond the bounds of Mobile, throughout the United States and Canada. His work can be found in international magazines and earned a spot in Design Wire’s “Design Annual 2007.”

Sheesh’s work has been described as “fantastic, melancholy and somewhat disturbing” and this show is aimed to portray the inspiration provided by events, family, surroundings and all the attendant emotions of each.

Also in this show are works from political cartoonist J. D. Crowe and character paintings from Charles Swan.

A reception occurs during the LoDa Artwalk on the evening of Dec. 14 and a Meet the Artists session will take place Dec. 17 at noon.

The gallery is open Mon – Fri, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and entrance is free.
