Jackson Browne

Date: Monday, March 17, 7:30 pm

Venue: Saenger Theater (6 S. Joachim St.)

Tickets: $49/$44/$39 available through Ticketmaster and at the Saenger Box Office

In 30 years, Jackson Browne penned and/or performed some of the most memorable songs of the 20th Century. He began his career in his teens and even spent time performing with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band before finding work as a songwriter in Southern California.

In 1972, Browne released a self-titled debut on Asylum records which includes “Doctor My Eyes,” still in heavy radio rotation. He went on to co-write the rock standard “Take It Easy” with Glen Frey of The Eagles and turn out hits throughout the decades. With his extensive repertoire of popular music, it is highly unlikely that any fan of music has not heard at least one of his songs.

When Browne takes the stage in Mobile, he will come only with an acoustic guitar in hand. His audience will be treated to cuts off of his Grammy-nominated album “Jackson Browne Solo Acoustic Vol. 1.” Fans of Browne can also look forward to a new studio album.

St. Patrick’s Day at Callaghan’s with Irishman Jim Flanagan, Peek and Grayson Capps and the Stumpknockers feat. Theresa Andersson

Date: Saturday, March 15, 1 p.m.

Venue: Callaghan’s Irish Social Club (916 Charleston St.) 433-9374

Tickets: Free

This watering hole has become quite a Port City institution over the decades and features one of Mobile’s greatest St. Patty’s celebrations. Since St. Patty’s Day at Callaghan’s can take a lot out of a person, they are celebrating a few days early to allow their patrons to recuperate before the work week begins (they’ll need it).

The entertainment starts at 1 p.m. with a performance from Irishman Jim Flanagan. Hailing from the heart of Muskerry Gaeltacht, Flanagan’s traditional Irish sounds will start the crowd reeling.

Mobile’s own Peek takes the stage afterward and rounding out the night will be honorary Mobilian Grayson Capps with his Stumpknockers, who will be joined by Theresa Andersson. Capps should have copies of his limited edition acoustic collection called “Songbones.” This release includes early versions of favorites such as “Slidell” and “Junkman” as well as several unreleased tracks.

Roman Gabriel Todd’s Beast Rising Out of the Sea, American Suicide, Malamute

Date: Saturday, March 15, 8 pm

Venue: Picklefish West Mobile

Tickets: $3 at the door

Going to a RGT’s Beast performance is quite a unique experience. It could consist of Todd and drummer Benny Devine pummeling the crowd with vehement musical blasphemy, or it could be a three-ring circus featuring special guests such as the admirably outspoken Joe Butler. The combination of Todd’s junior bass and Devine’s fusion drum styles create catchy sounds and rhythms that have made them popular from coast to coast through their extensive touring.

Fueled by beer and the traditional styles of hard rock, Pensacola’s American Suicide will also perform. This band is a ball of musical intensity with a stage presence that matches. American Suicide is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Mississippi prog rockers Malamute will make the evening complete with their extreme sounds. Malamute will hit the road in April with an extensive cross-country tour through the Southeast and Midwest.

The Rundown

Paddy O’Tooles (3692 Airport Blvd.) keeps with tradition St. Patrick’s Day with their grand soirees on Tuesday, March 17. Paddy O’Toole’s St. Patty’s celebration is so huge it pours into the parking lot. JackJaw Jimmy has also become a St. Patty’s Day tradition at this local pub because you cannot keep the McNab Brothers (and drummer Brian McDonald) from a good party. Last year, the boys in JackJaw Jimmy got the crowd grooving with their impressive Southern rock and blues sounds, and this year should be no different with various figures of the Mobile music scene sitting in randomly throughout their sets. Paddy O’Toole’s with JackJaw Jimmy should definitely be on everyone’s St. Patty’s itinerary.

Chip off the old block

Delbert McClinton is no stranger to the area, and has many fans in the Port City. It only seems natural that his son Clay McClinton should want to make a stop in Mobile. Schooled in harmonica and guitar by his iconic father, McClinton is following in his father’s footsteps with his bluesy Texas sound. On March 9, McClinton performed at The Blues Tavern (2818 Gov’t Blvd.). McClinton is touring in support of his new release “Son of a Gun.” Those who missed out on McClinton’s performance should not fret. McClinton has plans to visit Mobile again very soon. Stay tuned to the Nappie for more info.

Beach blast

As the weather grows warm, The Wharf in Orange Beach is gearing up for another season of great concerts. Before the Spreadheads invade in April, Corey Smith will be taking the stage March 15 for all the Spring Breakers. On May 2, Kid Rock and Reverend Run plan on making a stop. The Wharf is planning on a memorable Memorial Day weekend with performances from ZZ Top on May 23 and Taylor Swift with Kellie Pickler on May 25.

March at the Marina

March will be the month to head to LuLu’s Homeport Marina for their March Spring Music Series. This will be a series of free live performances from the best in local and regional musical entertainment. Will Kimbrough appears March 15 with John Lisi and Delta Funk performing the following night. 20 Minutes to Park will bring a double shot of their sounds March 18-19. With a line-up like this, LuLu’s is definitely backing up their reputation for being “a place to confirm that life is good.”
