Take 5 and GCEHJF poster entries
Where: Skinny Gallery, Mobile Arts Council (318 Dauphin St.)
When: through May 2
The Mobile Arts Council makes a nod toward National Jazz Appreciation Month with a pair of exhibits. The Gulf Coast Ethnic and Heritage Jazz Festival hosts an annual contest for its poster art and all entrants are on display.
Though its name is borrowed form the classic Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond jazz number, Take 5 is an exhibit less about music and more about potential. The exhibit encompasses work by students at the area’s five colleges and universities.
The opening reception is during the April 11 LoDa Artwalk on Arts Alive weekend.

GEN X: Post-Boomers and the New South
Where: Mobile Museum of Art (4850 Museum Dr. in Langan Park)
When: April 11 to June 29
In a region known for adherence to tradition, something new is emerging. Southern-based schools of art and design are building a healthy portfolio of contemporary work from Southern artists gathering attention nationally and internationally.
The museum was recently reaccredited by the American Association of Museums-a lofty status that only one percent of American museums attain-and shows like this make the reasons evident.
This exhibit features a post-modern slant encompassing a variety of styles and perspectives that move beyond the folk art of popular stereotype.
The museum is open Mon – Sat, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sun, 1 – 5 p.m.
Entrance is $10, $9 for seniors and military, $6 for students and group rates are available.

The War of the Worlds
Where: Joe Jefferson Playhouse (11 S. Carlen St)
When: Sunday, April 20, 2 p.m.
When Orson Welles and crew turned H. G. Wells’ science fiction masterpiece into a radio drama and broadcast it for Halloween of 1938, it caused a famous uproar. Adapted for the times and locale, the realistic portrayal sent listeners all over the northeast into a panic and young Orson became a household name.
Mobile’s Rick Miller directs another installment of JJP’s Pocket Readers Theatre in a recreation of the notorious event.
Entrance is $5 and light refreshments will be available.
