Kid Rock, Rev Run and Peter Wolf
Date: Friday, May 2, gates at 7 p.m.
Venue: The Amphitheater at the Wharf (4550 Main St.) www.thewharfal.com
Tickets: $49.50/$39.50/$25.00 available through Ticketmaster
Kid Rock set the Gulf Coast on fire the last time he came through, and this time should be no different. Kid Rock is hard at work promoting his latest release “Rock N Roll Jesus” and maintaining his status as the O.G. “Early Morning Stoned Pimp.” Considering his electrifying stage presence and a sound that crosses the musical spectrum, those in attendance are definitely in for stellar show.
Adding to the diversity of sound are two almost unlikely supporters. Hip-hop pioneer (and brother of Russell Simmons of Def Jam Records) Rev Run will be providing support. Run earned his street creds as a DJ for rap legends Run-D.M.C. The other surprise opener is Peter Wolf. Wolf fronted legendary “whammer jammers” the J. Giels Band.
Hopefully, if Wolf decides to revisit his J. Giels’ roots, it will be the glorious days of “Live Full House” as opposed to the pop-centric days of “Freeze Frame.”
Rollin’ in the Hay
Date: Saturday, May 3, 11 p.m.
Venue: Monsoon’s (9 N. Jackson St.) www.monsoonsmobile.com
Tickets: TBA
Over 15 years, Rollin’ in the Hay’s “renegade bluegrass” has been quite appealing to local audiences. This trio has gone from playing living rooms at keg parties in Auburn to playing some of the Southeast’s more impressive venues. Many were extremely disappointed to see this band go on hiatus a few years ago. However, fate had other plans and the trio seems to be stronger than ever.
The boys in Hay will have their latest release “Live from Oasis 3” available for purchase as well as a slough of releases dedicated to “pickin’” on a certain band such as “Pickin’ on Black Crowes,” “Pickin’ on R.E.M.” and “Pickin’ on Widespread.” On these albums, Hay provides their backwoods’ take on each band’s music. Otherwise, the boys in Hay will stay busy playing various stages across the Southeast.
Color the Coast
Date: Friday, May 2, 9 pm
Venue: The Blind Mule (57 N. Claiborne St.) 694-6853
Tickets: $5 at the door
Newcomers Color the Coast have already started prepping for a long summer promoting their debut release “Unplug and Run.” They have also developed a following across the Gulf Coast following performances at venues such as Thunder’s Tavern (Pascagoula, Miss.) and The Blind Mule as well as special acoustic shows at Serda’s Coffee Company in LoDa.
Comprised of Matt Arsensberg (vocals/guitar), Nick Chamblee (bass), Kyle Coffey (drums) and Kyle Duncan (guitar/piano), it appears that these boys are starting out strong with their debut release by recruiting Jada Entertainment for its creation.
Color the Coast definitely has a fresh, young alternative pop sound. Drawing influences from The Shins and Dashboard Confessional, their lyrical content and vocals as well as their clean guitars give them the air of an alternative offspring of Barenaked Ladies.
The Rundown
The Port City has definitely had more than its share of inspirational rockers, but Seraph is one that is making themselves known beyond the confines of a traditional praise service setting. The evidence of this is found in their latest release “Shout It Out.” Produced by Don McCollister (Sister Hazel, Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins), “Shout It Out” exhibits Seraph’s talent while getting their message out to the listener. Seraph’s U2 influences can definitely be experienced in the album’s title song as well as “Without a Doubt” with their reverberating guitars and heartfelt vocal qualities. Catch Seraph at the Hank on April 25.
Cajun and crawdads
Get ready for the Fourth Annual Gulf Coast Zydeco and Crawfish Festival! The City of Daphne puts on the festive smorgasbord of Cajun music and mudbugs. This year’s festival has been scheduled for May 16-18. This is a weekend long event that starts on Friday night with Zydeco bands and a fais-do-do. When Saturday comes along, the festival will begin with the Flounder Parade and more Creole than one can handle. It wraps up on Sunday with more music and food. For more information on the festival and how to register for the Flounder Parade, call (251) 626-5300.
Mo’ moe.
Port City moe. fans will be excited to know that the band will be releasing yet another in their “Warts & All” series. Each release in this series is a live concert recording handpicked by the guys in moe. The recordings are totally uncut and unedited and without overdubs. Moe.rons are allowed to truly relive the experience. The concert chosen for this one is their performance at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kan. Fans will want to grab them up while they can. The “Warts & All” releases are much like the “Dr. Stan’s Picks.” They are released on the band’s label (Fatboy Records), and they are released as a limited edition with only 25,000 pressed. This one will hit the shelves Tuesday, May 27.
Swift show
Tickets are on sale now for Taylor Swift’s performance at The Amphitheater at The Wharf on Sunday, May 25. She may be 18, but Swift has exploded out of the Nashville country scene and into homes across America. Recently, she took home two CMT Awards for “Video of the Year” and “Female Video of the Year,” and was nominated for “Best new Artist” at the Grammy’s. Joining Swift will be American Idol veteran Kellie Pickler.
