Illuminating Autism FUNraiser Weekend
Date: June 6, 7, 8
Venue: Pirate’s Cove (6664 County Rd. 95, Josephine, AL) 251-987-1224
Tickets: $10 entry donation
Even when it comes to raising money for an organization such as Illuminating Autism, Pirate’s Cove could not get by with a regular old fundraiser. They had to make it a FUNraiser, and they have quite a weekend filled with not only with music but also a raffle for a Jeep Wrangler and an authenticated piece of eight from a sunken ship.
All money raised from this event goes to Brilliant Minds in Destin, an organization dedicated to helping those with autism.
Col. Bruce Hampton and the Quark Alliance will kick things off on Friday at 7 p.m. with a night of improvisational jam.
On Saturday, the party starts at 10 a.m. with a set from Jon Cook and Smokey followed by the sounds of Larry T. Wilson & Big Muddy. Rounding out the day are Grayson Capps and the Stumpknockers fresh from their European tour.
Sunday morning folks can start coming down with Fat Man Squeeze’s country goodness, with Jody Payne, Steven Lee Veal and John Joiner, following at noon. Kenny Acosta & the House Wreckers will finish out the weekend with their swampy sounds.
Marc Broussard and the Sons of William
Date: Friday, June 13, 6 p.m.
Venue: The Bluegill (3775 Battleship Pkwy) 625-1998
Tickets: $25 available at Bluegill or www.frontgatetickets.com
Ever since he packed his Bluegill debut, Marc Broussard has become a favorite among local music junkies with his South Louisiana soulful sounds. Currently, Broussard is touring in support of his EP “Must Be the Water.”
With this one, it seems as if Broussard has admirably decided to concentrate more on that low, mellow voice that has made many a Mobilian fall in love.
Broussard is bringing some of his regional companions to kick off things for this show.
South Louisiana rockers Sons of William are no stranger to the area and have gathered quite a local following with their music. They are touring in support of their latest album “What Hides Inside.”
Shooter Jennings
Date: Saturday, June 14, doors at 9 p.m.
Venue: Soul Kitchen (219 Dauphin St.) www.soulkitchenmobile.com
Cover: $15 in adv. Available at Soul Kitchen and the Web site
When a person spends their formative years touring with Waylon Jennings, it’s only natural they choose the outlaw lifestyle.
Waylon’s son, Shooter, has journeyed beyond his father’s realm of traditional country music and shaped his rock-infused country sound while coming up in Nashville. It came to fruition after he relocated to New York City (by way of Los Angeles). In 2005, Jennings released “Put the ‘O’ Back in Country” on Universal South.
In 2007, Jennings released his fourth album “The Wolf.” With singles like “This Ol’ Wheel,” it seems as if Jennings has not been altering his musical formula with country-tinged fiddles backing this Southern rock anthem. Jennings also took on Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life” on this album. The title song of this album harkens back to his father’s sound, and “4th of July with George Jones” is an alt-country anthem that is another reaffirmation of Jennings’ legacy.
The Rundown
Mobile’s jazz scene just got a little smoother thanks to Roderick Cotton. Cotton is honing his chops in preparation for the release of his debut album “Modification.” Cotton is not a newcomer on the music scene, having made appearances at Bayfest and Funk Fest. He has also performed with Spiritual Vibes Gospel Group, The E.B. Coleman Orchestra and Bay City Brass Band.
With “Modification,” Cotton hoped to harness the cool vibe of the late night hours, and he has definitely succeeded judging from the cuts available online. His mellow woodwind croons on “Don’t Know” hypnotizes the listener with its dueling saxes, and “Out of the Ordinary” is an impressive groove. Pick up “Modification” at the Mobile Convention Center on June 28 at Roderick Cotton’s CD release event.
Holding the reins
The Blind Mule has covered its walls in local art, so it’s only natural they take full advantage of the Art Walk on June 13. While artists Ryan Jetters and Nikki Burkett work their magic, The Blind Mule will also be featuring some extremely eclectic sounds courtesy of two of the members of One Cut Kill. Adam Daedalus will provide a cavalcade of electronic improvisation with a little help from various vintage electronics and live digital looping. Joining Daedalus will be guitarist Jimmy Lee, who will be performing both solo and with Daedalus. This should be a perfect addition to any Art Walk itinerary.
Two of a kind
On Saturday, July 26, The Amphitheater at The Wharf will play host to a one-of-a -kind musical performance as two of the greatest performers in modern music will take the stage for an unforgettable night. B.B. King will perform a set of formidable blues courtesy of Lucille (his guitar). Joining King will be the red-headed stranger himself Willie Nelson.
With these two coming from completely different genres, it is safe to say they have something special planned for the evening. In an ideal world, this could include a set from each followed by a collaborative jam to finish the evening.
This is definitely a historic event. Tickets for this could go quick. Stay tuned to the Nappie and The Wharf Web site (www.thewharfal.com) for more information as it comes.
