Celebrating a decade of heritage

Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival

Where: Various venues throughout Mobile

When: July 31 – Aug. 3

This festival celebrates its first decade of existence with its usual smorgasbord engineered at aiding the vitality of the Azalea City’s cultural scene.

The first day’s event is poetry-centric and unfolds at the Alabama School of Math and Science, 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 31.

A jazz workshop ensues at 10 a.m. the next morning at the same locale.

The traditional centerpiece of the festival is the Saturday concert in Bienville Square, free to the public. The music starts at 4:30 p.m. and will lead jazz fans into the evening with a variety of acts.

Sunday’s closing jazz jam session begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Gulf City Lodge. Entrance for that event is $7 and free for participating musicians.

When: Aug. 8. 6 – 9 p.m.

Plucky Chesser gallery has undergone another change, morphing from gallery to de facto workspace. They haven’t given up their exhibitionist tendencies altogether, opening to viewers on special occasions.

The next LoDa Artwalk finds them unveiling a new show featuring a pair of bright young Atlanta artists, Bobb Lovett and Mike Germon whose work has adorned the hottest spots for up-and-comers in the Peach State metropolis. This show focuses on mixed media, photos and graffiti influence.

The show is free.

Mobile Opera Chorus

Think you’ve got what it takes to share experiences with Luciano Pavarotti or Leontyne Price? Warm up your pipes and warble your way onto the stage.

Mobile’s renowned opera company is holding chorus auditions for the 2008-2009 season open to new, current and past members. The approaching season consists of four works -Lucia di Lammermoor, Messiah, Songs of the South and Susannah-and voices are needed.

Hopeful members are instructed to prepare an aria or other appropriate musical selection and an accompanist will be provided.
