What: Celebrating Youth Art Month
Where: Skinny Gallery, Mobile Arts Council (318 Dauphin St.)
When: March 5-30
The March exhibition in the Arts Council offices features work from students at three area high schools.
The first, entitled Circling the Drain, is from Shaw High School and is comprised of work by students of Jeff Knighton. Hankins Middle School teacher Stephanie Bromley makes the second exhibit and Covenant Christian School teacher Karin Marrero entitled her collection of students’ work An Eclectic Collection.
The exhibit, an annual event of the Council for Art Education, Inc. and the Arts Creative Materials Institute, will be on display through March. The Arts Council office hours are Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

At left: New Orleans bassisst George French
Headlined by the George French Band with special guest Germaine Bazzle-all from New Orleans-a new organization has emerged onto the Mobile jazz scene. French played with Papa Celestine French’s band which traces its lineage back to Louis Armstrong’s days in New Orleans. Bazzle opens the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival every year and is known as the First Lady of New Orleans Jazz.
Also included is a workshop for aspiring young musicians that will convene at noon and is free. Organizer Troy Corley of Affinity Services, LLC wants to indoctrinate potential jazz stars on the history and nuances of the form while providing quality entertainment. Corley, a recent émigré from New Orleans, sees a lot of potential in the Mobile area and is eager to exploit it.
The cost of the show is $10 in advance, $15 on the day of the show and includes heavy hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are available at Spot of Tea. Evening shows begin at 8 & 10 p.m.

What: The Wizard of Oz

March 16 -25, Playhouse In the Park, 4851 Museum Dr. in Langan Park
There’s no place like home, but the Playhouse in the Park gets away from its usual residence for their latest show, The Wizard of Oz.
The company, active since 1961, bills itself as the “premiere youth theatre in the Southeast” and will take their act to the Saenger with two days of performances for school classes. The next week they head back to Langan Park to stage two weekends of shows for the general public.
The Friday shows in the park begin at 7:30 p.m. while the Saturday and Sunday shows begin at 2:30 p.m.
No word on whether a tornado will be used in moving the production back and forth.

What: Blue Man Group
Where: Mobile Civic Center Arena
When: Sun., April 15, 7:30 p.m.
Three blue bald guys are bound for town so get your tickets now.
The Blue Man Group brings their “How To Be A Megastar” Tour to the Civic Center Arena on the same day income taxes are due. The show is a rock concert, heavy on percussion with some magic, illusion, a critique of modern technology and information overload and a far less painful than paying Uncle Sam. Mix in some cobalt blue body paint and you have the show.
