George Porter Jr.

Bassist/vocalist George Porter, Jr. has been there through it all. While Porter may be best known through his work with The Meters, this accomplished bassist has collaborated with a diverse array of artists such as Patti LaBelle, Jimmy Buffett, Paul McCartney and Tori Amos. Many may also remember Porter’s collaborative effort with Jon Cleary, John Scofield and Ricky Fataar in the Piety Street Band.

In more recent news, Porter spent much of 2010 touring with Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann’s project 7 Walkers. When Porter hits the E-Sho, he will once again join forces with his band the Runnin’ Pardners for an intimate evening of grooves.

According to Porter’s website, he has been busy with the Runnin’ Pardners putting together a full-length release. Fans of The Meters will be excited to know that this will be a collection of old school tunes from The Meters revamped by Porter and his band. Currently, “Soul Machine” and “Borro” are available to preview and download. Those attending this show should be prepared to move and groove with this original jam master.

Holy Ghost Tent Revival is returning to the OGD with a fiery set of unforgettable music. Mobile’s rain tried to hinder their last performance at Callaghan’s. However, those in attendance were so taken by their music that crowd grew as the word spread across the Port City while the show was going on. Armed with keys, a banjo, an acoustic guitar, an electric bass, drums and a trombone, this North Carolina-based band crosses the musical genres with their sound. This will definitely be a riotous party worthy of the Callaghan’s crowd. On this visit, Holy Ghost Tent Revival will regale folks with favorites off of their debut “So Long I Screamed” as well as new cuts off of their latest release “Family.” This offering is yet another collection of songs that skillfully melds together elements of ragtime, blues, jazz, rock and Americana.

Underoath.

Metalcore has been a trend in rock that has experienced a steady rise in popularity over the past few years. Mixing characteristics of metal and hardcore punk, it has become one of the hottest of underground genres.

Underoath could be considered a band that has paved the way for the national acceptance of the metalcore scene. With their hometown of Tampa acting as a base of operations for metal bands such as Morbid Angel and Obituary, it is not surprising that these young men have embraced their extreme metal sound. However, the message in their music tends to be more inspirational than their predecessors.

Underoath has been spending most of their time in the studio laying down tracks to their yet untitled follow-up to 2008’s “Lost in the Sound of Separation.” With the departure of founding member/drummer Aaron Gillespie, the band has announced that Daniel Davison of metalcore favorite Norma Jean will be manning drum duties.
