I’ve said it before: Why are there no Filipino restaurants in Mobile? Well, we finally have one. Ang Bahay Kubo opened last week to good initial reviews, at 4513 Old Shell Road, Unit D, in the location formerly occupied by The House Restaurant. “Bahay” means house or home in the Philippine language of Tagalog, so what better location to start what will hopefully be a growing trend?
I’ve had several Filipino students brag on their native cuisine, yet never delivered me so much as a sample. Now I can finally see what they were talking about.
No pictures of the menu are on Ang Bahay Kubo’s Facebook page, but reviewers were touting the dinuguan, ang sarap and more than one mention of the halo halo. Open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., you will have plenty of opportunity to try something different in the charming outdoor seating just in time for fall.
Epicureans name “Restaurant of the Year”
A dining club with members from Mobile and Baldwin counties known simply as The Epicureans meets monthly to dine out as a group in our many fine restaurants. For this past season the “Restaurant of the Year” award was presented to Noble South, a downtown favorite.
It was tough to pick a favorite, but what swung the vote was a menu of Pork Osso Bucco, Blackened Grouper, Chef’s Choice Steak and a selection of wonderful desserts and wines. Club President Coleman Wood of The Epicureans presented Noble South general manager Myles Meade with the award and a plaque.
