To the editor:
Read “Sunday Brunch” for the first time in a longtime today 8/29. It’s a really concise overview of the week and leads to other stories I may have overlooked. Your assessment of the annexation effort by us here in West Mobile causes me to chuckle as it seems that none of those involved have read the city’s budgets for the past umpteen years as those document year after year monies that are derived in sales and business licenses from the pj.
Simple math is just doubling the avg for the past 3 or 4 years to get about $25 million dollars if we were annexed. The property tax would be about $2 million after 5 years, plus other taxes and fees that would be collected as required.
Finally, there’s the population shift that in itself would be monumental in that the city could recapture the citizens it’s lost because the housing standards are so drastically different today than they were 20 -30 years ago. Better insulation, wiring, lighting and smart home technology along with improved construction methods make the homes in the West desirable by new buyers. A 57 Chevy is great to see, but to connect to today’s world a 2021 Camaro is what young folks want.
Finally, kudos to you and Lagniappe and also to WAVH and Sean Sullivan both of you and your companies do an outstanding job of covering local politics and giving people the facts so they can make informed decisions. I applaud both of you for your dedication and perseverance.
