To the editor:
I voted for county wide municipal government in Jacksonville, Florida, in the 1970s. I would like the opportunity to do so in Mobile County.
The continual back and forth between the city leaders of Mobile and county leaders as to who is responsible for this or that is irresponsible. Currently, some leaders of the city want to stop rendering services to some within the city’s police district, letting the county assume the fire and police protection.
What if the county commissioners counter with the argument that since the Mardi Gras activities are in the city and refuse to help with policing during the festivities, will the city be left on it’s own to provide the necessary law enforcement needs?
I will always remember Steve Nodine’s proposal for one county-wide government. Tremendous savings, no longer duplicating leadership and services, would be realized. Maybe the continuous cutting this and cutting that would significantly be curtailed with additional money available to meet needs.
