Earlier this year, Lagniappe readers chose vocalist Symone French to take home the Nappie Award for “Best Area Singer/Voice.” Those who are familiar with this Azalea City diva’s vocal talents cannot deny that she was deserving of this honor. When she takes the stage, French’s delivery of sonic heart and soul is an instant musical seduction of her audience.
Since parting ways with Infant Richard and the Delta Stones (IRDS), French has collaborated with a number of local artists. Now she is traversing the Gulf Coast with her latest project, Symone French & the Trouille Troupe. The respective backgrounds of French’s backing band proves that she is in good company.
French recruited bassist Christian Heiden (IRDS) for this project. Lead guitarist Frankie Crawford, rhythm guitarist Tre Norman and drummer Justin Skinner of Mob Towne Revival fame are also included in the band’s lineup.
Symone French & the Trouille Troupe deliver an earthy brand of new-school indie soul. French’s buttery voice is steeped in classic influences in the same key as Lauryn Hill. Judging from her band’s musical histories, this group is not afraid to explore musical arrangements in a live environment. Their performance is certain to take the crowd through a number of emotional states and leave them begging for more.
