Partners for Environmental Progress, also known as PEP, is currently accepting nominations for its 12th annual environmental awards. The awards program will take place during PEP’s annual membership meeting April 19, 5-8 p.m., at Five Rivers Delta Resource Center.
PEP Member Awards are presented to member companies that have economically, environmentally and socially made positive strides and significant contributions to the Gulf Coast region.
Founded in 2000 to promote business and environmental quality-of-life preservation throughout the Gulf Coast, PEP is a coalition of business and education leaders who share the vision of applying science-based environmental practices to business and community issues.
PEP’s goal is to promote factual information regarding safety and environmental performance throughout the community in order to build a durable and valued Gulf Coast.
“If you look back over the past 12 years of award winners, it is apparent that our member companies are actively working to make sure that we have a clean and healthy Alabama Gulf Coast,” PEP executive director Jennifer Denson said.
“Whether it is Aerostar Environmental Services relocating gopher tortoises, Alabama Power testing the world’s largest Carbon Capture System, BASF’s turning a former waste into a valuable product or Arkema reducing its natural gas consumption by 10 percent — which is equivalent to 515 cars driving 12,000 mile per year — PEP members are making a difference,” Denson added.
There are more than 200 PEP members representing a wide range of companies including nonprofits and organizations with the common purpose of promoting economic prosperity and environmental sustainability in the area. Member companies include Alabama Power, Mobile Gas, Austal USA and many more.
PEP also partners with numerous organizations such as Mobile Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Planning of Organization Citizen’s Advisory Committee, Mobile United Natural Resources Committee, Mobile Bay National Estuary Program Executive Committee, Alabama Coastal Cleanup and Coastal Kids Quiz.
Awards distributed during the annual meeting will honor those members symbolizing the diversity of business and industry along the Gulf Coast including manufacturing, shipbuilding, engineering, construction, health care, finance, personal services and much more.
“Because the focus of the awards is on best practices and innovation and not simply overall environmental impact, small businesses are just as likely to be recognized as larger companies,” Denson said.
PEP is very proud of its member award recipients’ leadership and devotion in strengthening the Gulf Coast environmentally and economically by using more earth-friendly methods, Denson said. Recipients are chosen by the PEP Board of Directors through an individual priority voting system
“Too often we only hear negative comments about industry and the environment,” Denson said. “We are honored to recognize our local member companies’ innovation and commitment to environmental stewardship. A clean environment is good for business.
“Our past award recipients demonstrate that being environmentally conscious and innovative is also good for the company bottom line.”
PEP also offers the Community Partners in Recognition Award, which went to Mobile County Commission and Goodwill Easter Seals of the Gulf Coast in 2015 for their leadership efforts in establishing and operating the new Mobile County Recycling Center. Rather than driving 25-plus miles roundtrip to the nearest recycling facility, West Mobile residents now have a local drop-off recycling center accepting most household recyclables such as aluminum, paper, cardboard, glass and non-alkaline batteries. The project was funded by $2.4 million in federal grants from offshore gas and oil revenues.
“These award-winning companies exemplify PEP’s mission to promote sustainable economic growth while conserving, protecting and restoring the natural resources that make our region a unique and desirable place to live and do business,” Denson said.
Deadline for PEP Member Award Nominations is Feb. 26 by 5 p.m. Applications can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
