Nominations are solicited each spring, and the award recipients are selected by an independent panel of distinguished representatives of the Greater Mobile cultural community. The total contribution or body of work of the nominee and its impact on an artistic discipline or effect on the community are primary criteria for the selection process.

Awards are presented in six categories: Artist, Business, Educator, Organization (the Kit Caffey Award), Patron (the Mabel Bedsole Ward Award) and Volunteer (the Fred and Ann Delchamps Award)

The awards themselves are works of art. Each year, a local artist working in a different medium is selected to create a limited edition work to serve as such. Tony Wright, Bertice McPherson, John B. Howell, III, Casey Downing, Jr., Charles Smith, Brad Robertson, Wayne McNeil and Paul Moxon, Joe Hobbs, Wanda Sullivan and Rachel Wright have created past awards. This year’s version will be by Kate Seawell.

The 2014 nomination deadline is 5 p.m., May 30. Nomination forms may be requested from the Mobile Arts Council office (251-432-9796) or printed from the MAC website at www.mobilearts.org. The awards will be presented in late August.
