ASWA selects Super 12 team

Posted by Tommy Hicks | Jan 13, 2021 | Sports, The Score | 0 |

The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its Super 12 all-state football picks late Tuesday night. Three Mobile-area players — Javonte Graves-Billips of St. Paul’s, Lee Hunter of Blount and Deontae Lawson of Mobile Christian — are included among the dozen players honored.

The ASWA will announce its Mr. Football winner for the 2020 season late Saturday night and the winner likely will come from among the players on the Super 12 team.

Billips, an Army signee, was named the Class 5A Back of the Year by the ASWA. He rushed for 1,475 yards and 16 touchdowns this season while also catching 41 passes for 531 yards and three more scores. He was also used at times on the Saints’ defense.

Hunter, who signed with Auburn in December, was named the Class 6A Lineman of the Year. The defensive tackle made 80 tackles, including 29 tackles for a loss and eight sacks.

Lawson, who signed with Alabama, was named the 4A Lineman of the Year. It marked the second straight year he was a Lineman of the Year winner, having earned the same honor in Class 3A in 2019. A dual threat, at linebacker on defense Lawson made 74 solo stops, 42 assists, 15 tackles for a loss, one sack, one interception and had three forced fumbles. Also used on offense, Lawson rushed for 459 yards and eight touchdowns while catching 12 passes for 114 yards and another score.
