Last time Lagniappe Weekly caught up with local G. Howell, this singer-songwriter had just released a single (“Take Me There”) as the front man for the band Black Mouth Cur. With a gentle opening falling into a danceable groove, “Take Me There” helped Howell hone his songwriting skills.
Since then, Howell has embarked on a solo career. As he continues to fill his calendar with gigs, Howell will be showcasing his music alongside music scene notable Greg DeLuca (Paw Paw’s Medicine Cabinet) at the iconic Manci’s Antique Club in Olde Towne Daphne.
Howell has used social media to introduce the masses to his songs. While his work in Black Mouth Cur fell more under the indie rock label, Howell’s solo material has taken a turn on a dirt road. This singer-songwriter is building a solo collection filled with acoustic-based, modern mix of folk and country.
“Powder” is an ironic yet catchy tune filled with upbeat strums on the acoustic and verses focused on “a common inner struggle for Southerners.” With marriage serving as a theme, “Out of Reach” is a slow, heartfelt ballad with a tranquil vibe that will mesmerize listeners. “Right or Wrong” is a bold yet emotional indie country anthem that is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Howell and DeLuca’s collaboration should make for a perfect opportunity for locals to get acquainted with G. Howell’s sound.
