A local chapter of Team River Runner (TRR), a non-profit organization with a mission to help wounded veterans through adaptive paddle programs and water sports, will have a special event to raise funds to purchase new equipment. TRR will sell competition style barbecue ribs on the United States Sports Academy campus in Daphne on Aug. 1 from 1-4 p.m.
TRR invites veterans, free of charge, to participate in its adaptive paddling programs, such as kayaking. The program allows these veterans to get physical exercise outside the boredom of the hospital, overcome emotional roadblocks left by traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, learn a potentially brand new skill rather than struggle with a skill he used to be an expert at, and have fun while doing it. All of the boats, outfitting, safety gear, instruction, transportation, food, lodging, and volunteers are provided to participants through the generosity of donations made to the organization.
A donation of $30 will cover a rack of ribs, which feeds about four people. Sponsorships for the event are also available for $100, which will provide TRR with eight additional racks to cook to order. Following the event, the Mobile/Daphne Chapter of TRR will receive 90 percent of all donations.
For guaranteed pick up, all rib orders must be submitted by Monday, July 20, 2015. To pre-order your ribs or make a donation, click here or contact Tonya Butler-Collins, Coordinator of the Mobile/Daphne Chapter of TRR, at 404-316-7225 or Jessica Nelson, Academy Continuing Education Secretary, at 251-597-5490 or email at [email protected] Join the event on Facebook here.
Ribs can be picked up at the event on Aug. 1, between at 1-4 p.m., on the Academy campus, located at One Academy Drive in Daphne. Ribs and smokers will be provided by event sponsor Fired Up, Inc., a volunteer run non-profit fund raising organization. In addition to the barbecue on the Academy campus, there will also be activities for the entire family. Other sponsors that will be contributing to the event include Home-Depot and TRR is in need of volunteers from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. to assist in the preparations of the day.
