The Mobile BayBears dropped their series opener against the Montgomery Biscuits, falling 16-1 Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Tom Belza broke up the Biscuits combined no-hitter in the top of the eighth with a single to left. Then in the bottom of the eighth inning, after second baseman Gerson Montilla entered the game as the pitcher and surrendered eight runs in 0.2 innings, Belza took the mound and retired the only batter he faced to record the final out of the game.
The Biscuits jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. BayBears starting LHP Andrew Barbosa (0-1) exited the game with two outs in the first, after he allowed all five runs on just three hits, walking three and striking out one before giving way to the bullpen.
Biscuits starting RHP Jamie Shultz (1-0) shut down the BayBears bats. The righty didn’t allow a hit, walked three and struck out eight before exiting after six full innings due to a high pitch count of 88.
Montgomery right-hand reliever Mark Sappington pitched a hitless seventh inning before allowing Belza to record Mobile’s first hit with a single in the eighth inning.
Mobile (6-5) will look to rebound from Monday’s loss to the Biscuits (5-6) with a quick turn around on Tuesday when the two teams meet for game two of the five game series with the first pitch scheduled for 10:35 AM CT. RHP Aaron Blair (1-0, 4.50) will take the mound for Mobile against Montgomery RHP Austin Pruitt (0-1, 0.77).
The BayBears will return home to Mobile for the next homestand at Hank Aaron Stadium beginning on Saturday, April 25-April 29 against the Mississippi Braves.
