Date: Sunday, June 26, at noon
Venue: The Garage, 9 S. Washington St., 251-433-2223

Ben Walls was a beloved regular on the downtown scene. When not working or socializing at The Garage, Walls concentrated on his two life passions: sailing and his wife, Noretta. Eventually Walls was struck by stage-four colon cancer, and the first Ben Walls Memorial Jam was held to assist Walls and his wife with the expense associated with his treatments. Unfortunately, Walls lost his battle against cancer but his legacy and charity continue with what has become an annual event dedicated to helping individuals battling life-threatening forms of cancer.

This year’s jam is dedicated to helping guitarist Zig Luis. At 56, Luis is facing the same battle — stage-four colon cancer — Walls faced. Luis is best known for his impeccable guitar work in the legendary regional band Zig & the Zigtones. Over the years, he brought his music to venues across the Southeast and performed in Mobile with his group and as a solo act.

The jam’s organizers have a stellar event planned, featuring free crawfish (while they last) and a silent auction. As far as musical entertainment, some of the area’s best groups will be uniting in the name of charity. The lineup includes Ryan Balthrop, Eric Erdman, Fat Man Squeeze, J.E.R.I., Last Call Rodeo, Harrison McInnis, Chris Powell, Mark Saunders, Stereo Dogs and Lee Yankie.
