Soul Kitchen and 92 ZEW have a habit of throwing some hellacious Halloween parties. For this spooky soiree, the two local musical entities are bringing Benjamin Booker for his Azalea City debut. The ATO Records artist (and NOLA native) has been lighting the fire under the music industry’s ass with his self-titled debut.
Booker has shaped his sound with a versatile line up of muses including Blind Willie Johnson and T. Rex. Songs like “Violent Shiver” perfectly reflect these influences, a minimalist garage rock anthem that rages across ragged vocals possessed by the late Marc Bolen. Booker also maintains an old school punk edge on tracks such as “Have You Seen My Son?”
Booker is proving there is another side of the NOLA music scene that is seldom viewed. Judging from the style of music that is typical for bands coming out of the Crescent City, Booker has to be one of the freshest, and the world seems to agree. The young singer-songwriter controlled his crowds at Lollapalooza and the Newport Folk Fest. He has also been the perfect opening act for Jack White. Now, Booker is ready to rock all the ghosts and ghouls in attendance at one of Mobile’s biggest Halloween bashes.
