Free teacher workshop at Blakeley
Thursday, June 6, 9 a.m. – 12 noon. Conducted in partnership with the David Matthews Center for Civic Life and the Auburn University College of Liberal Arts, this workshop will introduce social studies teachers to the practice of deliberation in the classroom as a way to understand historical events. Teachers registering through the University of South Alabama’s Research and Inservice Center will receive professional development credit. Living History evening tours
Tuesdays in June, 6-8 p.m. at Fort Morgan Historic Site. History comes to life as historians and staff dressed in period clothing show what it was like to live on Fort Morgan during the Civil War, WWI and WWII along with weapon demonstrations and artillery shoots. National Donut Day
Friday, June 7, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the USS Alabama Battleship. Partnering with the Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama free coffee and donuts will be provided to visitors on the deck of the USS Alabama. National Donut Day commemorates the “donut lassies,” the female Salvation Army volunteers, who provided writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending, meals and donuts for soldiers on the front-lines in France during WWI. For more information go to www.ussalabama.com.

5:30 Forum
Tuesday, June 11, 5:30 p.m. at Moe’s BBQ (Spring Hill Ave.) Hosted by Mobile United featuring Mayor Sandy Stimpson and MCPSS Chresal Threadgill. The Forum is focused on the future of Mobile County Public School System. The audience will be able to ask questions directly to Stimpson and Threadgill during the event. Dragon Boat Festival
Saturday, June 8 at Battleship Park. Sponsored by Fuse Project, 55 teams of 21 people will paddle 46 ft authentic Hong-Kong style dragon boats across the water in front of the USS Alabama. Teams will compete for fastest time, costumes, overall spirit, top fundraisers and more. Teams raise money to support Fuse Project and their community revitalization project in Mobile. Crawfish and cornhole

“Science Fiction Science Future”

“The Making of a Food Desert: A Byproduct of Urban Renewal”
USA Archaeology Museum (6052 USA Drive South). Features side-by-side photos taken by volunteer Community Health Advocate Barbara M. Hodnett and archival photography from USA’s Doy Leale McCall Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Co-presented by USA Health’s Center for Healthy Communities, the photos are used to illustrate the loss of businesses, including grocery stores, pharmacies and medical offices in the 36603 ZIP code beginning in the 1950s. The exhibit is free and will be on display through the summer.

“Forever Plaid”
Tuesday thru Sunday, now through June 28. The University of Alabama’s theatre department follows the journey of Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie as they form their band “Forever Plaid” before they meet a tragic ending from which they return via the holes in the ozone for one final performance. Everblue Arts Festival
Now through June 10 in Fairhope. This 10-day introduction to Fairhope will feature performing arts events for the whole family, with memorable music and theatre including the hit musical Sister Act, An Evening of Frank Sinatra, The Marlow Boys Live, and Cabaret Under the Stars. A family-friendly event, guests are invited to watch our young artists perform an evening of musical delight. Season tickets include access to all shows for $100, or tickets for each evening are $25 per person and include dinner or appetizers.

“Urban Wild” at ACAC
Now at Alabama Contemporary Art Center. Urban Wild is an exhibition that looks for the diversity of art that is practiced throughout the streets, highways, and dirt roads of the South.
