For over a decade, the ceremony for the Greater Mobile Art Awards has been one of the welcome signs that autumn is at hand and with it, a new arts season. That is all about to change.
The Mobile Arts Council (MAC) is revamping the popular event. The timing will move it to the holiday season and the format will be retooled as well.
“Our intent is to celebrate the invaluable cultural and economic impact that the arts make to improve the quality of live in our community,” committee chair Jeff Lawrence told Lagniappe in an email. “We also intend to make the event a more entertainment-leaning ‘gala’ featuring performances by local artists as well as videos featuring the accomplishments of all the nominees and highlights of the various genres.”
Lawrence mentioned they want to rebrand the event as “Artys.” A preliminary date is Dec. 4, 2015 and will double as the culmination celebration of MAC’s 60th anniversary year.
The previously free event will be now be ticketed, but a venue and ticket price are yet to be determined.
In years past, MAC asked the public for nominations and winners were chosen from that field. Lawrence said that format had been tweaked recently and more alterations were forthcoming.
“The committee will determine the categories and nominees,” Lawrence wrote. “Voting for each category except Patron and Lifetime Achievement will be online. I expect the nominee announcement will be early October.”
Lawrence said he expected a decision on venue selection within a few weeks. He wants other details ironed out by mid-May.
