It wasn’t an easy decision for Mayor Sandy Stimpson, but on Tues., Jan. 28 the city of Mobile government except for emergency agencies will be closed.
“In an abundance of caution, I’ve decided to close Mobile’s government tomorrow. By (Jan. 28) at noon, I will make a decision for Wednesday,” Stimpson said. “Current indications from the National Weather Service show that a freezing rain will beginning tomorrow morning at 3 a.m. just north of I-10.”
That means the City Council meeting scheduled for Jan. 28 is canceled. It has not been rescheduled yet.
The city’s Public Works team is ready to sand roads and, if necessary, emergency personnel are staffing for the possible bad weather.
Police Chief James Barber said due to the inclement weather officers on special operations are being moved to traffic.
“If the need arises, more officers will be brought on to help,” he said.
Garbage and trash will not be picked up Tuesday or Wednesday. The missed garbage routes will be picked up Saturday. Trash will be made up during the next scheduled pick up.
Stimpson encouraged Mobilians to not drive on the icy roads.
“Just because the roads will be sanded, it doesn’t mean they are completely safe for driving,” he said.
The mayor said the decision to close tomorrow was not one that came lightly, but the projected weather made it necessary.
“I hope we made the right decision, but if we wake up tomorrow and its 60 degrees, then there’s nothing we can do,” he said. “This is a decision for the safety of our employees.”
Stimpson did note that the county except for emergency agencies is also closed, although no official word has been given to media outlets.
The Mobile Regional Airport will also close at 11 p.m. on Jan. 27 and remain closed through Jan. 28.
The following schools have been closed for Jan. 27 and Jan. 28:
Mobile County Public Schools, St. Paul’s Episcopal School, UMS Wright, Faith Academy, St. Luke’s Episcopal School, Saraland City Schools, Satsuma City Schools, University of Mobile, Satsuma Christian School and Daycare and Trinity Lutheran School & Day Care.
Baldwin County Public Schools and Mobile and Baldwin Catholic Schools will be closed on Tuesday. The decision for Wednesday will be made tomorrow.
