The city of Mobile has started construction on Museum Drive near Pat Ryan Drive and part of the road is closed. That isn’t typically news, but it is when one way to get to a voter center is blocked just five days before the municipal elections.

Museum Drive from Gaillard Drive, which is the road that goes through the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center, to near Pat Ryan Drive is closed to traffic due to repairs. Access to the Mobile Museum of Art, which is the voting center for District 7 precinct 2, is blocked for people coming from Gaillard Drive. However, voters and art patrons alike can still access the museum by taking Springhill Avenue to Pfc. John O New Drive and then taking a right onto Museum Drive.

City engineer Nick Amberger said the project would not cause people not to be able to vote on election day.

“I can’t imagine anyone having a problem voting because of the road closure,” he said. “There are signs before the road closure that state the road closes .6 miles ahead and the road until then is open to local traffic. That means any traffic from the election day is open to drive on Museum Drive.”

On July 30, the City Council voted to approve the repairs. Amberger said the contractor, Sunset Contracting, Inc., just started the project.
