While the ‘70s are closely associated with disco music, many groups found notoriety with a grooving mix of soul, funk and R&B. The Commodores were at the forefront of this movement and helped launch R&B icon Lionel Richie’s solo career. Even after Richie left the band, it continued to fill venues with people and funky grooves. The radio success of the singles “Slippery When Wet” and “Just to Be Close to You” helped The Commodores earn a national audience. “Brick House” remains a timeless favorite, especially with the local Mardi Gras scene.
Even after the ‘70s ended, The Commodores toured steadily and found a new and younger listening audience with the mid-’80s hit “Nightshift.” After years of nominations, this hit brought the band their first Grammy Award. These days The Commodores continue to perform nationwide and fans can even catch the band on the 2017 Soul Train Cruise.
