The aromas of the Azalea City’s springtime tend to be a mix of fresh flowers and spicy crawfish. Each year, many locals spend the city’s small sliver of spring dining on these delicious crustaceans. St. Mary Parish Knights of Columbus add bluegrass to the mix with their annual Crawfish & Bluegrass Extravaganza, which brings hundreds of Mobilians to St. Mary Catholic School’s playground for an evening of great crawfish and equally great bluegrass.
Steel City Jug Slammers will be traveling from Birmingham to bring all the jug band bluegrass the crowd can handle. Armed with a stone jug, washtub bass and strings, this band’s old-school Americana repertoire earned them first place at the 2015 Minneapolis Battle of the Jug Bands. Their setlist should be filled with grooving jug band sounds that are equal parts bluegrass, ragtime and classic blues.
The Azalea City will also be sending its own bluegrass ambassadors to the stage. Local favorite Fat Man Squeeze will provide lightning-fast picking and offbeat bluegrass. Local fiddle legend Eldon Bryson will be making an appearance. As the audience shells crawfish, they will also be entertained by the Cottage Hillbillies and The Azalea City Bluegrass Band.
