The Brickyard will be providing its patrons with one of the blues world’s most popular contemporary guitarists. Even though he is no stranger to the Gulf Coast, Selwyn Birchwood’s Brickyard show serves as his Azalea City debut. Birchwood laid the foundation for his career in South Florida’s extensive, traditional blues scene.
In 2013, this guitarist rose above hundreds of bands to become the winner of the annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis. He coupled this win with an acceptance of the “Albert King Guitarist of the Year” award. Within a year, Birchwood was celebrating his critically acclaimed debut album “Don’t Call No Ambulance,” which was released on the legendary Alligator Records label.
Birchwood’s blues jams will reach into his sophomore release, “Pick Your Poison.” This album is filled with Birchwood’s blazing stringwork on both the guitar and the lap steel. Throughout “Pick Your Poison,” Birchwood serves up jam-minded tracks that appease both staunch blues purists and rock enthusiasts. This blues artist taps into a number of blues styles over the album’s 13 tracks. Meanwhile, Birchwood maintains a balance of blues and rock, which is reminiscent of fellow Floridian Derek Trucks’ material.
