Police arrested Donald Keith Smith, 46, for a robbery at Regions Bank on U.S. 98 in Daphne on Thursday afternoon, following a high-speed chase across the Bayway into Mobile. According to police, Smith entered the bank and handed one of the tellers a note that demanded $10,000 and the teller handed over the money.
The teller told police Smith used a pistol in the robbery, but no gun was found on the suspect or in the suspect’s vehicle, according to Capt. Judson Beedy.
“We are still investigating this case in an attempt to make a determination,” Beedy said.
Smith left the bank on foot. According to Beedy, no one in the bank was injured during the robbery. Smith parked his car behind the bank in a neighborhood during the robbery. A description of the suspect and his vehicle was broadcast and a Daphne patrol officer located the suspect’s vehicle on U.S. 98.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but Smith led police on a high-speed chase across the Bayway into Mobile. The chase ended in Mobile near Duval Street. The Mobile Police Department and FBI assisted with the stop.
All the money was recovered from Smith’s truck and he confessed to the robbery when interviewed by the FBI and Daphne Police investigators.
This morning, Smith was still being held at the Daphne Police Department.
“Once all the paperwork is complete, he will be transported to Baldwin County Jail,” Beedy said. “This was a great example of several agencies working together to keep our communities safe.”
