The Mobile Police Department responded to the 3700 block of Swansea Drive on Thursday, Oct. 8, after receiving a report that the body of a newborn had been discovered in the backyard of a residence.
A week later, homicide detectives signed a warrant for the arrest of 30-year-old Ashley Collette Wilkins, charging her with abuse of a corpse, according to a statement from the Mobile Police Department.
On the evening of Oct. 15 Wilkins turned herself in, MPD Public Information Officer Terence Perkins wrote in an email message Friday. Mobile County Metro Jail records indicate Wilkins was booked at 8:54 p.m. on Thursday and was released less than two hours later at 10:15 p.m.
Wilkins lived in the Swansea Drive home, MPD spokeswoman Charlette Solis wrote in an email.
Perkins said it appeared the baby was born inside the residence, but police are investigating whether it was alive or dead at birth. Perkins also noted additional charges are unlikely at this time.
