Authorities in Baldwin County said a 15-year-old male camper sexually assaulted an employee at the Residential Wilderness Camp in Lottie on Tuesday morning and has since been arrested for rape.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office called a press conference in Robertsdale on Wednesday to inform the public of the incident, which they say occurred in the mid-morning hours of Dec. 22.Because of his status as a minor, the identity or any further information about the suspect in the case has not been released and likely will not, unless the court agrees to try him as an adult.
According to a release from the agency, BCSO officers responded to a report of a sexual assault at the camp on Tuesday and were able to detain the suspect. The victim was then transported to North Baldwin Infirmary for medical treatment.
A preliminary investigation revealed that in the early hours Tuesday, the victim observed the 15-year-old walking alone on a nature trail next to one of the buildings at the camp. Authorities say when the victim approached the suspect in the woods she was sexually assaulted.
The juvenile suspect was arrested on scene and has been subsequently charged with second-degree assault and first-degree rape. A hearing was held Wednesday morning before Judge Scott Taylor, who ordered the suspect to be detained pending further judicial hearings.
As of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, BCSO officials said their investigation into the attack was ongoing.
