Azalea City expatriate Ferrill Gibbs is returning with new material from his All the Kimonos project. As a solo artist, this singer-songwriter gathered a local following with a fresh dose of dramatic modern alt. rock. Eventually, Gibbs used All the Kimonos to expand this dynamic rock style. He even found time in his schedule to produce the “Unhand the Monster” podcast, which featured a number of local musicians. Even though he has relocated to Hempstead, Texas, Gibbs will be returning to Mobile to introduce his local fans to the sounds of All the Kimonos’ full-length album, “The Listening Room,” which was recorded at Dauphin Street Sound.
Gibbs has not lost his knack for dramatic sonic deliveries. “The Listening Room” sets the tone for the rest of the album with the song “Windows.” This track thrives from an eclectic rock arrangement that trips across the subgenres. All the while, Gibbs delivers an impassioned wave of vocals. The album’s title track is a hot, exotic arrangement filled with seductive grooves and acoustic goodness. “The Listening Room” finds balance through the heartfelt ballad “Angel.” This song combines a warm piano with a sincere lyrical delivery. The most impressive aspect of this album is its ability to take a diverse collection of songs and maintain aural cohesion through a number of subtle techniques.
