The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department responded to a call of a fully engulfed house at 23 S. Reed St. at approximately 5 p.m. this afternoon. While the home was destroyed, firefighters were able to rescue two dogs and at least one cat, while also preventing neighboring houses from catching fire.
Another cat was retrieved but was in distress, while two more were unaccounted for. According to MFRD Public Information Officer Steve Huffman, the occupant wasn’t home at the time of the fire and no firefighters were injured. The missing cats are believed to be outside. The cause is currently being investigated.
According to city tax records, the home belongs to Verna Edmonson.
