We received word last week Port City United Voices has catapulted from a recent appearance singing back-up for Amos Lee at Hangout Fest to center stage at the Saenger Theater later this month. The 48-plus member interfaith gospel group has been raising its collective voice for over 30 years and will now join the Mobile Symphony Orchestra in saluting Whitney Houston July 24, at 7:30 p.m.
Billed as the latest offering in the MSO Rocks series, this show will feature the pipes of vocalist Rashidra Scott, who has performed on Broadway in “Avenue Q,” “Sister Act,” “Hair” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Scott will be joined by a rock band and under the direction of Brent Havens.
“We were just blown away to be asked,” Eugene Morgan, chapter representative for Port City United Voices said in a press release. “This venue happens to be one of many we have been blessed to be part of and will be opening with gospel music, Whitney’s first love.”
The Music of Whitney Houston is sponsored by Hargrove Engineers + Constructors. Tickets start at $35 and can be purchased by calling 251-432-2010, online at mobilesymphony.org or in person at 257 Dauphin St. Group discounts are also available for groups of 10 or more.
