This is your final warning! The Downtown Mobile Alliance is taking over Cathedral Square Thursday, Oct. 17, for the 3rd Annual Grilled Cheese Meltdown. Twenty teams will be stuffing your face with America’s comfort sandwich in an effort to take home the Golden Spatula. Pay to get in and enjoy the contest.
Tickets are $8 in advance through eventbrite.com and $10 at the gate; children under 6 get in free. The weather is looking spectacular and you’ve been waiting to show off that new jacket. I’ll be wearing mine as I help crown the next “Big Cheese.” See you there.
Red or White hosting Oysters and Bubbles Tasting
I’ve had the oysters at Red or White Gourmet Center in Mobile almost as many times as I’ve scattered and smothered my hash browns. Imagine my excitement when I heard of their Oysters and Bubbles Tasting. Chef Arwen Rice is pairing local oysters with Crémant, Cava, Champagne and brut rosés for what will be an intimately memorable Wednesday evening, on Oct. 23.
The tasting begins at 6 p.m. sharp and ends at 7:30 p.m. You don’t want to miss this one, so RSVP at redorwhite.com. Tickets are $45 per person.
3rd Annual Gulf Seafood Gala coming to Dauphin Island
The Isle Dauphine Club will be filled with the smiling faces of seafood lovers as the 3rd Annual Gulf Seafood Gala lands on Dauphin Island Saturday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Enjoy delectable seafood straight from our waters as prepared by Pirate’s Bar and Grill, Dority’s Bar and Grill, Islanders Restaurant and Bar, JT’s Sunset Grill, Waves, Island Rainbow, The Pelican Reef and Catalina Restaurant. Ready yourself for a full cash bar, live entertainment and a silent auction of local art to aid in the digestion. It’s another chance to eat yourself silly.
Tickets are $50 per person and are available at dauphinislandarts.org and the Dauphin Island Gallery.
Fall ice cream flavors and an ornament for Old Dutch news
I eat soup all summer and ice cream all winter, simply because I’m stubborn. Cammie’s Old Dutch has released the not-to-be-missed fall flavors including pumpkin (did she use my recipe?), carrot cake, Southern cinnamon pecan and German chocolate. Sign me up for one of each.
If you haven’t heard, there is also the 2019 Christmas on the Coast ornament honoring the Goodwill Easterseals for their work in Mobile. The limited-edition collectible is 24K gold on brass plate, numbered and ready for the holidays. Only 10,000 are made. This place has a lot of fans. Don’t dawdle.
So much is coming up over the next few weeks. Tune in for more information on the Hangout Oyster Cook-off, Craft Spirits & Beer Weekend on Nov. 1 and 2, but only if you enjoy the idea of live music, booze and 100,000 oysters. We also have a couple of book reviews coming your way, as well as Thankstaking recipes and more.
