I’m already making plans for Fourth of July and I feel like summer just started. How does this happen? Oh yeah, that’s right. The Earth keeps spinning around the sun for some reason. Such an overachiever!
Anyway, I promised I would bring you a bigger plate of gossip this week, and I (usually) keep my promises. So let’s get to it – we have tales of stars and authors and winners of tea contests. You know, all the news only fit to print in this booze-soaked column! Enjoy!
High tea indeed!
The Pure Leaf iced tea company recently had a national sweepstakes. According to a press release, the contest was “inspired by the recent Royal Birth and to celebrate the launch of Herbal Iced Tea (the newest edition to the Pure Leaf family). [It] awarded American families whose babies were born the same day (May 6) as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor a professional portrait session with renowned NYC photographer Yaron Leshem in a location of their choice.”
Mobile’s own Zuercher family was randomly selected as the grand-prize winner through their Instagram post, and also won $10,000 to be put toward their newborn baby Clara’s education. They chose Greer’s Downtown Market as their location.
According to the release, “Parents Julie and Steve are from the area and met in college. The couple has had three kids in four years. During Julie’s most recent pregnancy, Steve was relocated to Romania. She didn’t want to be away from him so she and her two little kids moved to Europe for three months. Their older daughter (Ellen) is so happy to finally have a little sister and their son (Joseph) tries to kiss the baby a hundred times a day.”
Congrats to the Zuercher family! Who knows, maybe in a couple of decades baby Clara can be the next duchess when she marries Archie! Isn’t that what every American mama dreams of?!?!
Speaking of Archies…
Apparently, another Archie is in town: the actor K.J. Apa, who plays Archie Andrews on the teen series based on the Archie comics, “Riverdale.” If you have a teenager or have been one recently, you need no introduction to the CW series. If you are old, this is the series former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Luke Perry (our own teen-series superstar) was on when he died.
Apa is in town filming the drama “I Still Believe,” alongside Shania Twain, Gary Sinise and Nathan Parsons. Apa stars as the Christian music star Jeremy Camp. They were spotted filming on Woodlands Avenue near Ashland Place in Midtown this week. We hear Apa has enjoyed his time here in the Port City and even celebrated his 22nd birthday here on Monday. Happy Birthday, K.J.!
He talked pretty one day (last week)
Best-selling author and humorist David Sedaris had a reading and book signing at Page and Palette in Fairhope last Wednesday night. Seated tickets sold out quickly and it was standing-room only as the “Me Talk Pretty One Day” writer read a selection from his latest work, “Calypso.”
One lady did apparently feel free to just randomly shout out comments throughout the Q&A session of the evening, prompting numerous eye rolls from the other guests. But that’s OK, it gave everyone something to talk about as they waited to get their books signed. And with that many people in attendance, boy, did they wait.
My spies said Sedaris graciously spent hours signing books, taking time to chat with each person who approached his table and personalizing their books with drawings. Score!
He apparently didn’t even take a break to eat dinner – he had a fork in one hand and a pen in the other. That is dedication to your fans – or maybe just wanting to get the hell out of there, but either way, it was very nice!
We also hear local celebs were in attendance – former FOX 10 anchor Bob Grip was there, as was al.com’s cartoonist J.D. Crowe.
Though everyone from Mobile complained about the hideous, rush-hour traffic on the way to the 6 p.m. event, everyone seemed to make it there just in the nick of time and went home happy (and a little drunk) with their signed books.
Well, kids, that’s all I got this week! Just remember whether rain or shine, dramatic or scandalous, or some plain ol’ Calypso lovin’ (which trust me, Boozie really, really loves), I will be there! Ciao!
