Heroes Sports Bar & Grille’s University of South Alabama location at the corner of Hillcrest and Old Shell was briefly closed for renovations. The new and improved facility has reopened just in the nick of time for football. I’m sure that was by design.
With a basically new interior from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, new lighting and more TVs than you could shake a Fire Stick at, you’ll enjoy the same game day grub you’ve always loved there. Charging stations along the bar and dining room keep you juiced up so you can text your bookie — I mean fantasy league friends.
For the uninitiated, let me take you on a brief tour of what my Heroes meals are like. I tend to overindulge in the spinach and crawfish dip. The Clipper is one of the best original sandwiches in Mobile. The wings (any flavor) are on my very short list, of which I won’t name a victor. They also understand beer.
This may be the best place to watch a game in the whole city. Go for weekday lunch and see if they will turn all those TVs to “Days of Our Lives.” I’m all for some Drew Brees and Patch.
Feeding the Gulf Coast’s 21st Annual Chef Challenge
It’s time for the 21st Annual Feeding the Gulf Coast Chef Challenge. This year’s event will be taking place Thursday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Fort Whiting (1630 S. Broad St.). It’s a night of culinary magic as some of the area’s most celebrated chefs come together to fight hunger in their community while participating in a little friendly competition.
Complimentary wine and beer will go down smooth with a silent auction and live music by Roman Street. Ticket prices start at $75 and go up considerably with your generosity directly helping those in need within their 24-county service area along the Central Gulf Coast. Get your ticket today at feedingthegulfcoast.org.
Fast food news
There is a lot going on right now in the drive-thru world. Burger King has done the improbable with their new Impossible Whopper. This meatless patty comes from the company Impossible Foods, whose focus is making plant-based meat alternatives. I’m told it looks like — and kind of tastes like — the real thing. Finally vegetarians can kind of get an idea of what eating a hamburger is all about.
Could Popeyes be beating Chick-fil-A at its own game? Some say yes, since the release of the Popeyes chicken sandwich Aug. 12. This is a serious game changer. Don’t think the crew from Atlanta will take this heavy blow without retaliation. Last week, Chick-fil-A added mac and cheese to its menu nationwide. The classic recipe has a blend of cheddar, Parmesan and Romano.
Starbucks is bringing back its Pumpkin Spice Latte sooner than ever for 2019. You’ll have it Aug. 27. I won’t. By the end of September I’ll be drinking Cinnamon Coke, but the real news is the introduction of Sprite Winter Spiced Cranberry. Wow!
