Each year, many locals travel to New Orleans to enjoy the Big Easy’s younger but larger version of Mardi Gras. Biloxi’s Krewe of Neptune wants those making the trek to make a pit stop at Kress Live. The Neptune’s Carnival Kick-Off Party could be the perfect warmup for any road trippers heading to the Crescent City’s Boom Boom, with two NOLA bands slated to energize the crowd with their festival carnival sounds.
Formed in the mid ‘90s, the Hot 8 Brass Band is one of many brass ensembles that have taken the traditional NOLA brass sound and accented it with modern influences. Hot 8 blends jazzy brass music with hip-hop, funk and soul. These Jazz Fest regulars have toured extensively in Europe and are signed to the U.K.-based Tru Thoughts label.
The Honey Island Swamp Band will be joining Hot 8, sweetening its set with cuts from its latest release, “Cane Sugar.” The band filled this album with the jammed-out, souled-out swamp rock that has made it a regional favorite. Judging from these bands’ reputations, an onstage collaboration between Honey Island and Hot 8 would not be surprising.
