Jovial giant of jazz to be celebrated by MOJO Oct. 28

Posted by Kevin Lee | Oct 18, 2013 | Art Gallery | 0 |

MOJO Jambalaya- Thomas “Fats” Waller
Where: Gulf City Lodge (601 State St.)
When: Oct. 28, 6:30 p.m.

Thomas “Fats” Waller was larger than life in nearly every way possible. His ample size and gustatory abandon were notable enough, but when combined with his capacity for imbibing, his quick wit, charisma and musical genius, it made a package impossible to forget. His shadow still looms in jazz history and he crafted some of the memorable works in the American songbook.

Pianist Bobby Van Deusen performs the highlighted duties and after the acclaimed job he did in homage to Jelly Roll Morton in July of 2012, excitement is already building. Not only does Van Deusen possess the necessary chops on the piano, but his repartee and personality will do Waller justice.

Entrance is $12, $8 for MOJO members with student and military rates available. Fee includes a light jambalaya dinner. A cash bar is available.
For more info, call 251-459-2298, email [email protected] or go to www.mojojazz.org.
