Kevin Kelly was named by the Mobile Police Department as the officer involved in the March 14 shooting in Midtown that left a homeowner’s dog dead and another injured.
While perusing five suspects wanted for trespassing at Murphy High School, Kelly attempted to cut off a suspect by entering the backyard of Mark Yeager.
According to Mobile Police Chief James Barber, the preliminary investigation suggests the dogs left Yeager’s porch and charged Kelly. The officer then fired two shots, killing one dog and wounding another.
MPD officers apprehended one of the five suspects, a juvenile, whose name will not be released.
Kelly, a six-year veteran of the MPD, was involved in the shooting of 23-year-old suspect Shawn E. Taylor on Feb. 19, but an internal investigation found the incident was justified.
An internal investigation into the shooting of Yeager’s dogs is ongoing and additional information will be released upon its completion, the chief said.
Barber said it is unknown at this time whether in disciplinary action will be taken against Kelly.
