When World War II was raging, little else conjured memories of home like the strains of the day’s music. Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, The Dorsey Brothers could set heads to moving across the Pacific Theater and it served as a dutiful reminder of the way of life and loved ones American soldiers were fighting to protect.
Now Mobile Opera helps resurrect those days with this fundraising event that turns back the calendar to 1946. They’ll turn the deck of this war memorial into a one-night USO canteen with music provided by the Mobile Big Band Society.
Orders for dress are “come as you are or get out your uniform, zoot suit, padded shoulders, seamed nylons and all your 1940s attire.” Tours of the ship will be conducted until 20:00 hours, or 8 p.m. for us civilians.
The food will be supplied by Naman’s Catering, along with beer, wine and soft drinks.
Cost is $75.
