Over the last couple of years, Mobile Arts Council’s fall fundraiser matching creative talents against each other in timed events has proven popular, so this year they are upping the ante with the inclusion of new mediums. They’ve also moved the date back to its late September spot.
As in the previous two years, the ThrowDown will feature a battle between five local artists: Ameri`ca Jones, Chris Cumbie, Shelly Smith, Rando Dixon and two-time returning champ Jim Hayward. Each will be given a box with pre-selected unknown items, a shared supply closet and 90 minutes to create a new work of art. The pieces are then sold in a live auction to the highest bidders.
New this year is the Arts ThrowOn, a spin on wearable art. Competing in the ThrowOn will be Mary Elizabeth Kimbrough, Devlin Wilson, Ardith Goodwin and Sharon Samples whose resulting works will be auctioned off during the evening.
They’ve also added the ThrowOff, a competition between potters Susie Bowman, Shane Reynolds and Lisa Warren. The potters will be creating their works during the Sept. 12 LoDa Artwalk, firing then auctioning them at the Sept. 26 event.
A silent auction with works and gifts donated by local artists and organizations will also take place. Paintings, photographs, textiles, turned wood, ceramics and sculptures are available along with ticket packages to performances, museums, weekend getaways and more.
Popular DJ Hunter Clark will provide music. Food will be courtesy of The Royal Scam and Heroes Sports Bar and Grill. Also available will be wine, beer and the Arts Council’s ever-popular signature cocktail, the Red Rooster.
