Even though the streets of downtown Mobile will be silent for Mardi Gras 2021, locals are finding other ways to celebrate. The Merry Widow will be providing a musical alternative to Mardi Gras with a performance from Blackwater Brass. Since its inception, this eight-piece explosion of festive sounds has become one of the Gulf Coast’s most popular groups.
Hailing from Ocean Springs, Miss., Blackwater Brass takes the traditional brass sounds of the Mardi Gras season and revises them for a modern ear. While funk plays a heavy role in the group’s sound, Blackwater Brass infuses its set with musical influences ranging from gospel to EDM. The group’s interpretation of crowd favorites is also a fun aspect of the band’s live performances. Ultimately, those who attend this show need to be prepared to be on their feet and grooving until the last note drops.
In addition to Mardi Gras standards, Blackwater Brass will also lace its set with originals. “Strawberry Jam” lives up to its name. This track is a building, funk-rock tune with guitar work that shines as brightly as the horns. “The D” is a beautiful mix of New Orleans brass jazz and smooth rock. While these tunes might show the band’s inclination to rock, “Blackbeans” is a modern brass anthem in the same vein as Trombone Shorty.
Die-hard Blackwater Brass fans will definitely want to arrive early for this event. Because of COVID restrictions, The Merry Widow will be limited to half of the venue’s capacity. In addition, patrons will also be required to wear a mask (medical grade, not Mardi Gras) to enter the building. Otherwise, Blackwater Brass’s Merry Widow show will give Mardi Gras fanatics an outlet for their misrule.
