McCrory named Mobile water and sewer director

Posted by Dale Liesch | Jan 20, 2021 | Latest, News | 0 |

After an extensive nationwide search, Billy “Bud” McCrory has been selected director of the 90,000 customer utility by a unanimous vote today of the Board of Water and Sewer
Commissioners of The city of Mobile.

McCrory, who served as Assistant Director of Administration for MAWSS before his promotion, has nearly three decades of water and wastewater experience. The Semmes native began his career with MAWSS 29 years ago as a summer worker before returning as a full-time employee in 1994.

“Growing up in this organization has taught me many things and I am thankful to all those individuals who I have had the pleasure of working with,” McCrory said.

Once hired full-time, he worked his way up through the system holding positions of Unskilled Laborer, Public Service Worker I and II, Crew Chief, Public Service Supervisor I, and Maintenance Management System Coordinator. McCrory served as Water and Sewer Director for the City of Satsuma from 2005 to 2015.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Faulkner University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Alabama.

“We are in challenging times but I can assure you we will make it through this together and be
better tomorrow because of it,” McCrory said in a statement. “Staying focused on the end goal and working together as a team we can accomplish anything. I look forward to getting together with everyone and beginning this process.”

He succeeds Charles Hyland who became Director of the Mobile Area Water & Sewer System in 2013. Hyland held a variety of management positions at MAWSS in his 33-year career at the utility.

Before working at MAWSS he was an administrator for the Mobile County Health Department.

“Bud is the right fit for the job, and I have full confidence that he will improve upon the momentum we have started and move us forward in fulfilling our Mission with a positive, inclusive culture and innovative ideas,” Hyland said.

Hyland’s retirement is effective March 27, 2021.
