Mayor Sandy Stimpson and acting Mobile Fire-Rescue Chief Billy Pappas announced the promotion of four new fire captains Friday at the Toulminville Fire Station.
Captains Michael Chestang Jr., Steven McEvoy, Chad Sprinkle and Jon Wilson were selected to be captain after an interview process and written exam. Pappas said these promotions came up under the current review system, which took into account a list of recommended candidates from the Mobile County Personnel Board. Pappas said a new system, approved by the Mobile City Council to use a third-party contractor to do evaluations, would be in effect for the next group of promotions.
Each of the new captains has at least 10 years experience with MFRD, Stimpson said, during a press conference. Most have family connections to the department, as well.
For instance, McEvoy’s father served MFRD for 34 years, including 20 years at the Toulminville Fire Station, the site of Friday’s press conference. McEvoy has spent 16 years with MFRD.
Chestang is a fourth-generation MFRD firefighter. His great-grandfather, grandfather, father and an uncle were all members of the MFRD. At the press conference his father, Michael Chestang Sr., presented him with his brass and his grandfather’s badge.
In addition, Sprinkle’s brother is also a MFRD firefighter. Wilson has worked for the department for 12 years as a paramedic.
The promotions come on the heels of the retirement of MFRD Captain Mark Hansberry, which was effective on May 15.
