Update: The Mobile Police Department has confirmed that the suspect is now in custody, but her identify has yet to be released publicly.
Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying a woman who they believe started fires in the restrooms of two local businesses Wednesday.
The separate incidents occurred at the Winn-Dixie on Grelot Road shortly before 9 a.m. and a Wendy’s on Hillcrest Road just after 11:30 a.m.
Mobile Fire-Rescue Department companies were dispatched to both scenes after employees and customers reported seeing smoke.
The fire at the Winn-Dixie was contained to the restroom, according to MFRD spokesperson Steve Millhouse, and did not spread to other parts of the store.
No injuries were sustained during the incident, but employees and patrons were forced to evacuate the building.
Firefighters found a similar situation when they arrived at the Wendy’s on Hillcrest only a few hours later.
Employees at the scene told investigators a disgruntled female customer intentionally set a small fire in the women’s restroom before leaving the restaurant.
The fire was extinguished quickly. There were no injuries but some “mild damage” did occur.
Now, MFRD investigators are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect believed to be responsible for both incidents.
Footage from security cameras puts what appears to be the same woman at both locations before the separate fires began.
Anyone with information is urged to call MFRD at (251) 208-7311.
