Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) responded to multiple sanitary sewer overflows as a result of heavy rainfall in the Mobile area on Feb. 3. The locations include Island Court, Westwood Street, Crenshaw Street, Johnston Avenue, Seminole Street, Morgan Avenue, Bizzell Avenue and Pecan Street, Lubel Avenue and Delta Street. An estimated total of 24,565 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into Eslava Creek and Three Mile Creek.
Dr. Bernard Eichold, Health Officer for the Mobile County Health Department, advises area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with any standing water that may have accumulated as a result of these overflows. Those who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.
Area residents should take precautions when using Three Mile Creek and Eslava Creek for recreational purposes because of the overflows. All seafood harvested in this general area should be thoroughly cooked before eating. People should wash hands after cleaning seafood and before preparing food.
