The Mobile Police Department has confirmed an incident in which an MPD officer shot a man in Prichard earlier today.
According to MPD officials, Mobile police officers with the Mobile County Street Enforcement Narcotics team were in the area of First and Rich Avenues, a known “hotspot” for drug activity, at approximately 11:20 a.m. when officers attempted to approach two men.
One of the men, who was later identified as 30-year-old Terrance Grey, attempted to flee, pulling out a semi-automatic handgun as officers gave chase toward him, MPD spokeswoman Ashley Rains said.
According to Rains, officer Matthew Winston then drew his weapon, fired one shot and struck Grey in the leg.
Grey was taken into custody and transported to USA Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, she said.
Winston, who has been with MPD for approximately three years, was not injured in the altercation, according to Rains.
Authorities said Mobile Police Internal Affairs and MPD’s Homicide Unit are conducting an investigation into this officer-involved shooting.
