Late Friday night, Mobile Police officers shot and wounded a man during a domestic violence incident that escalated to gunfire.
According to authorities, at about 11:20 p.m. as officers were responding to a home on Heidi Street in Mobile, a man in his late forties opened fire on officers as they were approaching the residence. Police said the suspect was using a semi-automatic handgun.
Officers returned fire, striking the suspect in the chest and left arm. He was later transported to a local hospital where, as of Saturday afternoon, he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Last week, Lagniappe’s cover story highlighted multiple lawsuits recently filed against the Mobile Police Department related to use of deadly force. It also featured comments from local law enforcement leaders about how officers handle violent situations, especially those related to the mentally ill.
